English Meaning & Significance

The story of Karva Chauth: Long ago, a merchant had seven sons and one daughter, Veeravati, whom her brothers adored. The first fast: Visiting her parents after her wedding, Veeravati kept the waterless Karva Chauth fast for her husband's long life. By evening she was faint with hunger and thirst, but the fast could only be broken after offering water to the moon. The false moon: Unable to bear her suffering, her brothers lit a lamp on a distant tree behind a sieve so that it looked like the moon. Believing it, Veeravati offered arghya and sat down to eat. The loss: With the first bites came bad omens, and then news that her husband had died. She learned that her brothers' false moon had broken her fast before time. The devotion: Veeravati resolved to win her husband back. She stayed by his side for a whole year and kept every Chaturthi fast with faith. The next Karva Chauth she kept the full fast and worshipped Karva Mata and Gauri. The blessing: Pleased with her devotion, Karva Mata blessed her with lasting good fortune and her husband came back to life. Since then married women keep this fast, hear this katha together, and break the fast only after offering arghya to the moon.
